Rivalry Week: No lack of spirit

Clashing colors, purple

and orange

“It’s about school spirit and beating Jackson,” said Hoover High School
sophomore Brett Evans about Spirit Week. “This is the best week of school.”

The Vikings take on the Polar Bears tonight at 7:30 at Robert Fife Stadium in
Jackson Township. Both schools are preparing by getting their students as
pepped up as possible.

Sumo wrestlers, pirates, butterflies, sleepwear, dreadlocks and people in
bright mismatched clothing dominated Hoover High School’s landscape on
Wacky Wednesday. At Jackson High School, events included dressing up
in country and western garb, a pep rally and bonfire.

Still, as much fun as students have dressing up and holding rallies during
Spirit Week, the week is still about football.

“Every year we want to beat Hoover,” said senior Andrew Vanderlind, a
starting cornerback for Jackson. “Maybe we can get a triple — beat Hoover,
get into the playoffs and knock them out of the playoffs.”

Penny Price and Ellen Livick, parents of Hoover cheerleaders, have been
selling T-shirts with the words, “Friends Don’t Let Friends Wear purple.”
The word “purple” is written in orange.

“This is a fun week,” said Price.
