Watch Matt Wakulchik take over a football game from a variety of positions and it's easy to see he is a special athlete.

The Hoover High School senior does it all - catch, run, tackle, kick. But it's what he does away from games that impresses his coach.

"You appreciate him more when you see him in practice each day and the way he works," Hoover head coach Don Hertler Jr. said. "That's where it all starts. He's one of our two or three hardest-working kids."

Add that to versatile, athletic and productive, and Wakulchik is an easy choice for Federal League Player of the Year.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound senior starred at receiver, safety and kicker, leading the Vikings to the league title and the state playoffs. He gained 1,227 all-purpose yards and scored 124 points.

"He's just a tough player that rises up when the competition gets good," Hertler said.

Wakulchik caught 53 passes for 876 yards and 12 touchdowns during the season. He made 12 more catches for 140 yards and two scores in a first-round, five-overtime win Saturday. He added his fifth field goal of the season in that game.

Defensively, he made 41 tackles and an interception. He also averaged 20.3 yards on kickoff returns, and rushed for 89 yards and a score.

"He just makes plays," Hertler said.

Six other Vikings join Wakulchik on the first team - guard Dom Boyle, linebacker-tight end Kevin Dahl, two-way tackle James Georgiades, tailback Erick Howard, fullback-linebacker Mitch Rose and quarterback Jared Wackerly.

Howard is the lone sophomore in the league to make the first team. He rushed for 1,215 yards and 15 TDs with Boyle and Georgiades leading the way. Georgiades also is one of the area's top interior defensive linemen.

Rose is a tough blocker, who made nine catches and a team-high three interceptions. Dahl was the team's top tackler and caught 16 passes for 240 yards and four scores. Wackerly completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 1,898 yards and 23 TDs.

Boardman has five players on the first team - seniors Ryan Holmes, Evan Klepec and Nick Tuminello, and juniors Damien Jarrett and Corey Linsley. Their leader, D.J. Ogilvie, is the coach of the year after guiding the Spartans to the playoffs three years removed from an 0-10 season.

Two other playoff qualifiers, GlenOak and Lake, combine for five first-team picks.

GlenOak has two seniors, tailback Anthony Smith and quarterback-punter Justin Szink. Smith rushed for a league-best 1,424 yards and scored 14 TDs. Szink averaged 39.5 yards per punt, rushed for 416 yards and passed for 721 yards.

Lake features seniors tailback-cornerback Gene Onabiyi, tight end-linebacker Dylan Traikoff and quarterback-defensive back T.J. Viscuso.

Onabiyi rushed for 1,152 yards, scored 12 TDs and made two interceptions. Traikoff intercepted four passes, made 41 tackles and three sacks, and caught 15 balls for 214 yards and two TDs. Viscuso gained 1,018 yards of total offense, accounting for 15 TDs, while intercepting three passes.

Perry has fours seniors on the first team - David Baughman, John Hyde, Eric Magnacca and Matt Vick. Magnacca and Vick were on the first team last year, too.

Magnacca rushed for 1,086 yards, his second straight 1,000-yard season, and scored 16 TDs. Vick played quarterback, wing back, fullback, linebacker and was the long-snapper. He totaled 45 tackles, rushed for 199 yards and averaged 13.6 yards per completion. Baughman made 10 tackles for loss and two sacks. Hyde starred at quarterback, rushing for 492 yards and averaging 18.1 yards per completion.

Two juniors from Jackson are on the first team, Drew Blinco and Erik Carlson.

McKinley also has two on the first team, senior two-way lineman Sean Whited and junior kicker Andrew Gage. Whited is a repeat pick and anchored the Bulldogs up front. Gage made six of seven field goals, with a long of 42 yards, was 20-for-21 on PATs.

Fitch is represented by junior D.J. Moss.
