Hoover vs Massillon Jackson
Canton Repository

SITE: North Canton Memorial Stadium, 7:30 p.m.

RECORDS: Jackson 4-5, 3-3; Hoover 7-2, 5-1.

LAST WEEK: Jackson 14, McKinley 7; Hoover 21, Perry 7.

LAST MEETING: Hoover won, 21-7, last year and leads the series, 46-22.

WHAT TO WATCH: Don’t expect the Vikings to come out satisfied with last week’s big win that guaranteed at least a share of the league title. “It’s rivalry week, and Jackson’s played good football here in the second half of the year,” Hoover coach Don Hertler Jr. said. “Our goals are to win the league outright and get a home playoff game. We’ve got to win to do that.”

Each team played well defensively last week.

Both have big-play threats on offense. Jackson TB Carlin Isles presents a huge challenge to the Hoover defense. “He’s the fastest kid we’ve ever played against. That’s for sure,” Hertler said. “Every time he touches it, you’re going to hold your breath.”

Hoover TB Erick Howard does not have the speed of Isles, but the Viking sophomore is a 1,000-yard rusher with the ability to control a game. Hoover is difficult to defend because of QB Jared Wackerly. His go-to receiver is Matt Wakulchik, but Wackerly isn’t afraid to spread the ball. He didn’t have a big game statistically last week and didn’t attempt a pass in the second half, but Hertler loved how he played. “I thought he really had great composure and directed things for us,” Hertler said.
