Canton Repository
SITE: North Canton Memorial Stadium, 7:00 p.m.
PLAYOFF HISTORY: Massillon is making its 17th postseason
appearance, first since 2006. The Tigers are 22-16. Hoover is
making its second straight postseason appearance and 16th
overall. The Vikings are 11-15, beating Toledo St. John’s
and Nordonia in overtime games a year ago to reach the regional finals.
LAST WEEK: Massillon 17, McKinley 0; Hoover 26, Jackson 7
LAST MEETING: Massillon won, 45-14, in a first-round home playoff game in 2005.
The Tigers also beat the Vikings in two other playoff games, 27-7 in 2001 regional
finals and 31-0 in a 2002 regional quarterfinal at Hoover.
WHAT TO WATCH: Two outstanding tailbacks headline this one — Massillon
senior J.T. Turner and Hoover junior Erick Howard. Turner, who also stars in the
secondary, is headed to Michigan. Howard, also a hard-hitting linebacker, is being
recruited by Big Ten colleges.
Turner is coming off a 208-yard performance against McKinley in which he made
plays in all phases of the game. Howard rushed for 211 yards in the win over
Jackson. Howard leads the county with 1,795 yards and 25 TDs. Turner’s
1,333 yards rank him fourth in the county.
“They have a difference-maker. We have a difference-maker,” Hoover coach
Don Hertler Jr. said. “But I think it’s going to come down to othe people.
Everybody’s going to try to take away what we each do best, and we’ll need
other guys to step up and do things.”
Hoover QB Brett Tulodzieski is another source of big plays. He has thrown for 1,027 yards with seven TDs and just two interceptions, as he spreads the ball to a variety of receivers.
Robert Partridge has taken over at quarterback for Massillon and has thrown four TD passes in four weeks.
WR Bo Grunder has seven TD catches among his 15 total receptions and also can make big plays on returns.

Tigers’ Turner too much (for McKinley)
Massillon senior J.T. Turner is sure to remember his final game at Paul Brown
Tigers Stadium. The tailback-cornerback bound for Michigan was an impact
performer all over the field. On offense, he ran it 28 times for 208 yards and
a touchdown.
Defensively, he was in on at least five tackles and had one spectacular strip
of a McKinley receiver after a catch, where Turner ripped out the ball to set up
a touchdown drive.
He also nearly blocked a punt on special teams, causing McKinley’s punter to
scramble away and get tackled for a 5-yard loss. That play helped set up a
field goal to open the scoring.
