Four years ago, Erick Howard and Don Hertler Jr. hugged for the first time.

Howard was an eighth-grader at North Canton Middle School. Hertler was a coach taking

an interest in a kid making a poor decision.

Hertler was visiting Howard in a juvenile detention center.

They vowed — Howard, Hertler and Howard’s older brother Phillip — that their next hug

would be under more positive circumstances. And for the next four football seasons,

Erick Howard gave Hoover High School some unforgettable memories.

Howard, last season’s Mr. Football in Ohio, has come a long way since his first meeting

with Hertler. On the heels of another outstanding season, he becomes the first two-time
