No one really thought it would happen. Down 34-2 against McKinley at halftime? If there were believers Friday night at North Canton Memorial Stadium, they were all inside the Hoover High School football locker room.
That’s the only place they needed to be. In one of the most incredible come-from-behind wins in Stark County history, Hoover beat McKinley, 38-34, on Friday night.
“I don’t know about greatest, but it was the biggest deficit against a great program,” Vikings head coach Don Hertler Jr. said. “I won’t say it was the greatest because there’s always greater ones ahead. You just hate to be on the side of that.”
One of the last things the Vikings heard came from a volunteer assistant coach. Mike Johnson, who helps coach Hoover’s linebackers, said something that stayed with the team.
“He told them, ‘You know what’s going to happen if you quit,’ ” Hertler said. “ ‘If you don’t quit, you never know what’s going to happen.’ ... Mike doesn’t say a whole lot, but he did a good job.”
