Friday, October 1, 2010

SITE: North Canton Memorial Stadium, 7:30 PM

RECORDS: Boardman 3-2, Hoover 3-2.

LAST WEEK: Boardman 19, Perry 13; Hoover 24, Lake 10.

BOARDMAN GAME NOTES:

  • Perry turned the ball over three times in the first half, leading to an early Spartans lead.
  • Perry's defense could not stop Boardman's RB, Nick Buonavolonta, who had 141 yards rushing on the night with a touchdown.
  • Trae Robinson was effective at QB last Friday against Perry in a limited role by completing all three of his passes for 82 yards and a touchdown that came on a nifty screen pass to Hammond, who took it 33 yards to the end zone.
  • #21 Devin Campbell had the other touchdown on a 17-yard run early in the first quarter.

LAST MEETING: Boardman won, 16-7, last year.

SCOUTING REPORT:

Boardman coach D.J. Ogilvie has seen his team trade off wins and
losses this season. Ogilvie thinks the reason for the up-and-down
play is pretty simple. While Boardman’s defense has been solid, the
Spartans’ offense has been anything but consistent. Boardman is
starting five new offensive linemen up front this fall, leading to some
of the issues, while the quarterback spot has been unsettled thanks
to a lingering injury to starter Trae Robinson. (1)

While Robinson may have been ineffective prior to the Perry game,
he was more than capable against Perry completing 3 of 3 for 82 yards
and a TD. When Robinson is not behind center, the offense is in the
hands of Junior Ryan Pollifrone (6-2, 195).

Both Pollifrone and Robinson look to #1 Dayne Hammond (6-5, 190)
as their primary target.

Boardman's spread offense features in addition to Dayne Hammond, wideouts: #21 Devin
Campbell, #84 William McCurdy and #12 Tyler Walls.

Boardman's new offensive line consists of: Zach Zidian (6-2, 270), Brian Yatsco (6-0, 235),
Austin Main (6-1, 235), Eric Yovanovich (6-3, 220), Zach Machuga (5-9, 220) and
Justin Babos (6-0, 215). Their progress as a unit will determine Boardman’s success.

Boardman's running back, #18 Nick Buonavolonta (5-9, 185) is now healthy. He possesses
good speed and at times this season has been featured in a "Wildcat" formation.
Last year as a junior, Buonavolonta was a 1,000 yard rusher.

“Boardman is a fast and physical team... They’re the best overall team we’ve played
across the board. They’re a spread team that will also run some option and jet sweep
stuff as well." - Perry coach, Keith Boedicker (2)

Defensively, the Spartans’ 4-4 scheme has kept them in most of their games thus far
and attributed to their victory over Perry last week. The Spartans got a boost from
sophomore middle linebacker Justin Babos, who had three tackles for loss and forced
a fumble in his first game as a defensive starter against Perry. (3)
