Despite numerous sophomores in the mix and a squad filled with underclassmen,
Don Hertler Jr. won’t call his Hoover High School football team young anymore.

“It’s Game 6,” Hertler said.

That means that no matter what grade is listed by a player’s name on the roster, that
player is experienced at this point of the season.

The Vikings (3-2, 1-1), who host Boardman (3-2, 1-1) tonight at 7:30 at Memorial Stadium,
are coming off a coming-of-age win against previously undefeated Lake.

Sure, they got some breaks, from the bounce of the ball to Lake’s assorted injury
problems. But the Vikings also made their breaks with great effort and sure tackling in
a 24-10 win.

“Credit goes to (Hoover) for being well-prepared and playing with a different level of
intensity than the week before,” Lake head coach Jeff Durbin said.

Hertler felt as if his team had been stuck in neutral, if not going backward, since a
Week 2 win against Louisville.

It’s imperative that the Vikings improve each week and stay focused, he said.
