Todd Porter, Canton Repository

NORTH CANTON  By the time the Appleby family sedan came close to crossing into Ohio, the passenger seat was reclined. Austin Appleby was exhausted, physically and mentally.

Hoover High School’s senior quarterback returned Wednesday night from the University of Louisville camp, where the temperature on the field soared past 100. It was a trip well worth his time and energy.

The Cardinals were the first BCS school to offer Appleby a scholarship. They join a growing list of mid-major schools to do so, and they may prove to be ahead of the curve with camp days at Ohio State, Penn State, Iowa, Purdue and others ahead.

“That was definitely a big one,” Appleby said. “I’ve been to Louisville four times, and I love it. It was an awesome camp. They’re strong in my major (business), but at this point, I’m in no position to name my No. 1 (choice), because I’m going to all these other schools in the next few weeks. But I love Louisville, and it’s big to get that offer.”

Appleby’s stock is rising. He is coming off season-ending knee surgery late last season. He returned to the field sooner than expected and has been working out for college coaches popping in at Hoover this spring.

Now coaches are getting to see him on their turf in a different setting. Read more...
