NORTH CANTON  Two weeks ago, the Hoover Vikings were an 0-2 high school football team coming
off a humiliating 43-point loss at the hands of a long-time rival.

Today, the Vikings are a 2-2 team with a better sense of direction and a new hope as they prepare to go
to Lake on Friday night for a 7:30 kickoff.

So, Don Hertler Jr., how has your team done it?

“I’m not really sure why the turnaround has happened, but the kids have hung in there, they’ve had two good weeks of practice and we’ve developed a little bit of an identity in all three phases,” said the Vikings head coach. “We’re trying to figure out where guys fit best. We’re nowhere close to being a great football team, that’s for sure, but we’re improving.”

The Vikings bounced back from a 50-7 loss to Louisville in Week 2 to shut out Lexington, 32-0, in Week 3. Last week, Hoover fell behind, 14-0, early against Perry before holding the Panthers to six points the rest of the way en route to a 38-20 win.

Hertler could talk about a lot of reasons for the turnaround, but settles on, “Mainly, we’ve blocked and tackled better.” Read more...
