Perry Panthers @ Hoover
Friday, September 16, 2011

SITE: North Canton Memorial Stadium (7:30 PM)

RECORDS: Perry 2-1, Hoover 1-2

LAST WEEK: Perry lost to Dublin Coffman 16-34. Hoover beat Lexington 32-0

LAST MEETING: Perry won 56-19, last year

HEAD COACH: Keith Boedicker

WHAT TO WATCH  The Panthers will look to bounce back from their first loss, while the Vikings hope to
continue their momentum after earning win No. 1. Hoover’s 32-point win at Lexington came one week after
the Vikings suffered a 43-point loss to Louisville. They held the Minutemen to 144 total yards and forced
three turnovers. Hoover’s defense will be tested by Jon Miller, who is Perry’s top rusher with 605 yards and
five TDs. Miller averages 7.2 yards a carry. The Panthers must take advantage of their scoring opportunities,
something they were unable to do last week. Perry drove inside the Coffman 10-yard line twice and failed
to score. Hoover QB Austin Appleby has thrown for 413 yards and three touchdowns through three games.
He connected with Brandon Race on a 21-yard TD pass and scored on a 3-yard run last week. Alex Welsh
also gave the offense a lift by rushing for 99 yards and a touchdown. He is the Vikings’ top rusher with
143 yards. (1)

PERRY SCOUTING REPORT:

Experience
17 first-time starters

Running Game
Senior tailback, #33 Jon Miller (5'10" - 200) is the focal point of the offense. Coming off last year's
1,646-yard season, Miller has rushed for 606 yards, at 7.2 a carry, and five TDs this season. Miller
averages 28 carries for 202 yards per game.

Passing Game
Following a stellar performance in week one against Akron East, first year starter at quarterback,
#11 Adron Bealer (6'0" - 165) has struggled the past two weeks, completing just 9 of 26 passes. With the threat
of a strong running game, look for the Panthers to make better use of play-action. Over the past two weeks,
the Perry passing game has accounted for only 101 yards. (2)

“Bad throw, bad catch, bad timing, whatever it is, we’re not throwing the ball as well as we need to, that’s for sure.” -  Boedicker

Friday night we didn’t make the plays we needed to make and that put us in some bad situations. When you’re third-and-eight or longer a lot of time, it’s tough to convert. It’s much easier when it’s third-and-two. That’s where we want to be. I’m a very good coach when it’s third-and-two all the time.”

Getting every piece of the passing game in sync will be a priority as the Panthers head into the start of Federal League play at Hoover this Friday. Even with a workhorse running back, Boedicker knows that Miller can’t do it all himself.

“You have to have some other things to depend on,” Boedicker said. “You can’t be a one-trick pony in the Federal League and get it done. It’s difficult to do that. Jon’s a great running back, but we need to do a better job of providing a supporting cast for him.” (3)

Junior fullback, #30 JoJo Tayse (6'0" - 200) has demonstrated versatility by catching two touchdown passes out of the backfield.

Offensive Line
The Perry running game is powered by senior OL Tony Rohr (5'10" - 230) and senior center Sean Keane (6'1" - 240).

Perry has missed OG Doug Mayes (6'2" - 270) who was injured during the Central Catholic game. His replacement has been
Ron Humphrey (5'10" - 200).

Defensively
Perry has missed NG Doug Mayes. His replacements have been Alex McMichael (5'11" - 225) and Tim Bowen (5'9" - 180).

Junior linebackers Jake Moore (6'0" - 210) and JoJo Tayse have been solid and lead a defensive unit that started three sophomores against Dublin Coffman.

Dublin Coffman's fast paced offense wore Perry down. The Panthers managed to keep pace with Dublin Coffman in the first half, trailing just 17-14 at halftime. However, Perry exhibited fatigue in the second half resulting in a 17-2 scoring edge in favor of Dublin Coffman.

Summary
As much as Coach Boedicker would like the passing game to compliment the Panther running game, look for Perry to run, run, run. (4)
