NORTH CANTON  One of Stark County’s traditional high school football stadiums is getting a makeover. Don Hertler Sr. Field at Hoover High School’s Memorial Stadium will have FieldTurf installed later this summer.

The $680,000 project is being funded through private donations. No public money will be used, Superintendent Michael Gallina said.

“We had a group of about five businessmen who did not want their names prominently displayed anywhere and wanted to know if we would be interested in them helping us out, and there was no cost to the board of education,” Gallina said.

The whole process started about a month ago and Gallina said it has progressed swiftly. Work will start May 23 with Vasco Sports Contractors leveling the old field. The expected completion date is the first week of August.

Once Hoover gets its artificial surface, more than half of the Federal League stadiums will have turf; Perry, Boardman and Jackson do not. However, a committee is raising funds to install turf at Robert Fife Stadium in Jackson. Jean Furbay, who has helped organize the community fundraising campaign, said it appears Jackson will have turf in 2011.
